In the land of music
Saturday night saw me shoot Melbourne band The Go Set at The Zoo. Thinking that the doors open at 8 and first band around 8:30-9:00pm my girl friend and I rock up at 8:15pm to read that first band is at 9:30pm The Go Set at 11:30pm, we are way to early so we decide on having a coffee.
After a coffee and a few bevies at a club we head on down to The Zoo to find a very humble crowd singing along very loudly to Mick Thomas, who, I have never heard of. Apparently since my last visit to The Zoo [Ska Night 2006] they have changed some lighting around and put some very bright white lights over the singer and back up vocals/musicians this was great until they took one step back into the darkness so it was hard to keep up with them moving back and forth changing my settings ever few seconds, but I got there in the end.
The Go Set seemed very different to Mick Thomas, he was more laid back and bluesy where as The Go Set had a bagpipe playing punk rocker and a metal looking lead singer. They seem like a really great band to watch and the little crowd that hung about the stage seemed to enjoy themselves. I how ever left three songs in to make it home by 1am!
My next gig is this Thursday at Arena where I’ll be seeing the Kaiser Chiefs who hail from the United Kingdom, I’m quite interested to shoot this as there seems to be a bit of hype behind it plus Frontier Touring are putting it on. I’m not sure what sort of lighting, crowd or restrictions they will have on this show as 30 Seconds to Mars was total shambles and they wanted me to shoot from the back, so I’m not sure if I should take my 70-200mm f2.8 with me just in case.
